This class is a college level course in the study of the American Government. It is designed to challenge students in the investigation of the US system of government. The course provides an opportunity to examine political beliefs and behaviors, political parties, interest groups, civil liberties and civil rights and the three branches of American government. Major emphasis is placed on the study of American political ideology and the evolution of its democratic institutions. Students will be able to evaluate the political role of American citizens and their involvement in the US government. The structures of the American political system will be investigated with emphasis placed on the changing political culture of our pluralistic society. Students are expected to be fully engaged in accumulating knowledge in a course utilizing thematic studies, documentary readings and the use of the inquiry method. The development of a well-organized writing style and the ability to synthesize social science data to support a well constructed theiss backed by intelligent and reasoned argument is essentia,l to success in this course.
