This course offers a program of writing, vocabulary, literary analysis and close reading to help students develop an appreciation of American Literature. With some instructional support, students are expected to regularly use critical thinking skills to complete course assignments. A survey of all genres of American literature forms the reading segment of the course. A research paper on a literary topic is taught as part of the writing component. Required readings beyond the course anthology include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Great Gatsby. In preparation for this course, students must read one literary selection over the summer, to be announced in May.
