Description
AP Language and Composition engages students in the study of rhetoric and emphasizes expository, analytical and argumentative writing. The course is designed to challenge students as readers, writers, and thinkers, and also to prepare them thoroughly for the AP English Language and Composition exam in the spring. The course’s primary focus is the understanding of rhetoric, so the majority of the reading is non-fiction. Genres within non-fiction include essays, editorials, visual texts, speeches, films, and memoir. We also, however, read and study a good deal of fiction, with a particular focus on American Literature. The course is organized by skills and themes. The skills pertain not only to the tools required for successful completion of the AP test, but also to the skills needed to read and write critically across all genres of literature. Themes reflect the content of the fiction and non-fiction texts addressed within that unit. Although this course is not a prerequisite for AP Literature and Composition, it will be of use to students who go on to take that course. Students must apply for this course. When considering admission, English 10 grades, English and history teacher recommendations and PSAT scores are considered. [Two semesters. One credit.]
